Black Isle and Poppels from Sweden collaborated a year or so ago to make a fantastic imperial stout called Systems Theory. Since then the beer has been maturing in whisky barrels and is now ready to make a reappearance.
There are two versions – a West coast version (using Islay barrels which gives a peaty flavour) and an East coast version which has oak, vanilla and dark chocolate notes.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with nice large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some black chocolate notes with some cocoa notes and some peated scotch notes also discernible. Taste is a mix of black chocolate notes with some residual sugar notes, some cocoa and nice barrel-aged notes of peat scotch. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Enjoyable imperial stout with nice barrel-aging features.

Pours a black colour with no visual highlights. The head is big, frothy, bubbly, deep beige with very good retention and bubbly-creamy lacing. Roasted malt base aromas with dark fruits, molasses with the barrel that adds hints of whiskey. Oh wow ! This barrel-aged liquor takes over in the taste with some roasted malts that linger alone. Hints of wood on the tongue. Pretty good overall, but nothing outstanding with such a long title - full of this and that.
