Keg at the Plasterers Arms, Norwich. Pours almost black with a small off-white to beige head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, liquorice, alcohol, dark fruit and a touch of spiced rum. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Full bodied, slick texture, soft to flat carbonation, very good.

Keg at the Cambridge Blue. A hangover (no pun intended) from the recent pub beer festival where TBM were prominently featured. Dark brown, almost but not quite black. Very little head. Light aroma for a beer of this intensity: some milk chocolate and latte notes. The taste is infused with chai spice but there’s an unwelcome medicinal and herbal note. The finish is long and focused with Irish cream, liquorice and potpourri finishing it off. Good but not great, and far from the best I’ve had from a brewery whose strong beers I tend to hold in especially high regard. (Also starting to wonder how well TBM work in keg but that’s for another day.) Still worth seeking out as it’s a tasty original recipe.
