Poured up on tap at Tipsy Cactus where it exhibits a chocolate to burnt copper colored body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up an interesting and inviting blend of grapefruit, pine, chocolate malts and roasted malts. The taste delivers firm grapefruit to pine sap near chewy hop bitterness. To midway chocolate malts and increasingly roasted malts begin to kick in and culminating with a moderate degree of burnt malts. This achieves a tasty hop to roasted malt balance. I dig it.

Taster flight at Great Notion NW. Dark brown pour, ring of beige head, rings of lacing. Light roasty aroma. Taste features elements of chocolate, dark toast.

Black body with beige head that lasts. Light malt aroma with some hop. Roasty body with hoppiness. Lasting finish. Good body.

Tap. Pours unclear black, small beige head, good lacing. Aroma is pine, roasty. Flavor is light sweet, light plus bitter. Medium body. Gr8 example of an increasingly rare style that deserves more love

On tap at Great Notion - Georgetown, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is robust, with lots of roasted malt and earthy, piney hops in standard black IPA balance. Flavour is a little murky and muddled, with earthy, roasted malt, and bittering hops that don't have the best clarity. A bit too muddled and lacking precision. I'm glad they tried this forgotten style, but the execution leaves something to be desired.
