Dark, brooding and robust, all should bow their heads before the humble porter. Often misunderstood and misappropriated, the real porter is a thing of simple beauty. In its element, the sense of satisfaction you get form a full bodied, roasted coffee, malty chocolatey stout is unparalleled. Respect the elements.

33cl bottle from Beer52.com. An opaque peaty brown pour with a thin beige head; aroma of brown sugar; thin in the mouth with a roasted coffee taste, some demerara sugar and caramel; and a rather thin and bitter (coffee dreg) finish. Not a great porter.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a medium-height fine-grained tan head. Smells of dark cherries, roasted malts, cold coffee and dark chocolate. The taste follows the same notes. Medium to light body and a cherry bitter aftertaste. A classic porter.

Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Changkat, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is light creamy roasted malt. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter with a smooth soft smoky liqourice, light chocolate palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smooth fresh and with some flavour. Very drinkable.

Bottle from Cornelius as Leith Porter. It pours jet black with a thick tan head. The nose is rich, roasted malt, bitter - sweet, light smoke, liquorice, umami, cacao nibs and toasted sesame seeds. The taste is rich roasted malt, charred wood, salted liquorice, cacao nibs, ash, cracked black peppercorns, earth and umami with a firm, dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty robust and flavoursome. Nice one.

Keg at Jeremiah’s Taproom, Edinburgh. Very dark - brownish black, if you will - with a pretty little crown of beige head. Aroma’s a bit quiet. Roast malt, blackberry and strong coffee coming through. Taste is strong and bitter, but the malts feel too aggressively roasted, giving the impression of overstewed diner coffee. The finish bears the brunt of the roasted malt, leaving the aftertaste with a slightly acrid feel. Despite this lack of balance, it’s a pretty good beer all told.
