Cask at The Northern Way, Preston. Pours clear amber with a thick cream-coloured head. Aromas of dark fruit and toffee, something mixed dried herb. Taste is more of the same. Light bitter finish. Not the best condition.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wigan. Pours golden brown with a medium sized foamy creamish head and good lacing. Is slow to settle but does so eventually. The aroma is an attractive blend of traditional hops and autumn fruits. In the mouth it fluctuates between sweet and bitter with a creamy texture. Flavours are malts, traditional hops, toffee and autumn fruits with hints of dried fruit and ginger coming through later. Finish is slightly dry. This is quite nice – the epitome of how a traditional bitter should be.

Installed on a pump in The Crown Inn, Hebden Bridge ready for Halloween. This golden ale with a head has a small sweet fruitiness in its aroma. It’s not high on flavour but certainly a robust full-bodied brew that agrees with the palate.
