Intense, dark, brooding, sinister…and really rather tasty, Gothic Imperial Stout is our first dark beer to be bottled. It features ten different malts and a blend of English, German and American hops which combine to produce a complex rich dark sensation with a hint of sour fruits. Best drunk in a remote moorland farmhouse, on a stormy night with a full moon and a sense of foreboding.

Pitch black, small creamy tan head, mostly diminishing, minimal lacing. Strong sweet aroma, dark malts, liquorice, coffee, maple syrup. Smooth taste, light heavy to medium sweet and light bitter, roasty, toffee, liquorice, sugary. Sweetbitter aftertaste, liquorice, light roast, medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation. Lacks real strength but easy to drink.

330ml bottle from Moo bar, Carlisle, consumed on the train back to Edinburgh. Clear dark brown with a thin tan head. Treacle, dark chocolate, liquorice aromas. Taste is more of the same, additional cocoa vibes, demerara sugar. Oily texture, rich. Sweet finish. Good.

Appearance is black, with a beige head which quickly disappears. Aroma- chocolate, fudge, brownie, hint of vanilla, a bit of plum and dark fruit, cocoa powder, toffee, coffee, whisky fudge. Taste- lots of coffee in this, with dark malts, treacle toffee, fudge cake, biscuity malt, vanilla hints, milk chocolate. Plum and dark fruit towards the end. Mouthfeel is on the thin side for the style, with a short finish.

Bottle courtesy of dad and like all the beers tonight it’s shared with dad, (cheers dad) consumed at home Friday 21st August 2015 Pours reddy brown with a big creamy head. Very, very easy drinking a touch of toffeea steady roastiness. Soft in the mouth a little (tiny) bit boozy (some oomph...) looks good in glass with ruby red glint, not great but certainly not overshadowed by the Mikkeller Beer Geek Big Brunch Blend.
