Intense, dark, brooding, sinister…and really rather tasty, Gothic Imperial Stout is our first dark beer to be bottled. It features ten different malts and a blend of English, German and American hops which combine to produce a complex rich dark sensation with a hint of sour fruits. Best drunk in a remote moorland farmhouse, on a stormy night with a full moon and a sense of foreboding.

Bottle picked up at the brewery. Pours dark mahogany brown with a small lasting tan coloured head. Lovely aroma of rich chocolate, raisins, vanilla, coffee, dark fruit and a hint of liquorice. Medium sweetness, light to moderate bitterness. Full bodied, slick texture, soft to flat carbonation. Very good.

Can from the Offie, Leicester. Black with indigo notes. A quickly disappearing tan head. Black raspberry and lots of liquorice in the aroma. Sweet taste with fruity sour notes and a bitterness from the intense malt. Finishes sweet with loads of liquorice and a touch of vanilla in the aftertaste. Good but too sweet for what it is, and the liquorice is too dominant.

Bottle at Colin’s. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, cocoa, plain chocolate, dark fruits and dried cherry/cranberry. The taste is dry, rich roasted malt, toasty, earthy, liquorice, pine needles, Eccles cake and some spice with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Sort of ok. Not great for the style though.
