Pours deep clear gold with thin white head. The aroma emits full grainy notes with mild sweet malts and floral hops in the background. The flavor has a grainy level of malts mixing with sweet malts and dark fruity esters. The graininess makes a valiant effort to fight off the onslaught of sugar sweetness coming from both malt and dark fruity esters. In the end it gets too sweet for my taste.

12oz bottle. Golden-orange colored, with little lasting head. Mild but potent malty aroma. The taste is big and rich, covering the palate in thick sweetness. Slightly yeasty and pungent in the Bock style. A little crisp balancing hops even it out and keep it drinkable, especially at 8.5%. A great Maibock, another well done seasonal from Erie.

On tap at the Bocktown in the Robinson Twp shopping complex. The pour is brownish orange with a red tinge. The brew is clear and there is barely any head except a froth of white and a girdle around the inside edge of the glass. Decent looking carbonation rising from within the brew. Has a slight fruity and hoppy floral aroma. During the first sip hops are present. It starts smooth and then builds to a medium hop bitterness. This is not the kind of bitterness one would associate with an APA or IPA, much smoother than that. Hoppy, slightly grapefruit rind flavors are fading rapidly in the back of the throat after each drink. Don’t seem to sense much fizz or bubbliness while you’re drinking. Carbonation is almost flat. Finish is interesting in that it begins hard and hoppy then rapidly fades to a medium bitter hoppy back of the throat feeling that lasts for a while after you’re done drinking. Overall, I don’t recall the other heller bocks having so many hops in there. Probably just my imagination. Not quite as good as Nova Paka Valdstejn but on par with Hofbräu München Maibock and Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

I have not been overly impressed with the beers from this brewer in the past but this one was rather good. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark golden color with a small tan head. The aroma is sweet and sugary with an undertone of ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet and sugary with light malts and a hint of caramel. There is a hint of an alcohol burn but given the 8.5% this is reasonable.
