Sometimes innocuous looking things harbour surprises. Calm water, dangerous undertow. Smooth, easy drinking IPA, big ABV.

To prep this big beer, we loaded up a hefty malt bill with crisp Canadian Pilsner malt, biscuity Maris Otter, spicy rye malt and a sprinkling of a special blend of caramel malts for a grounding sweetness.

We then loaded up the hops with Amarillo, Mosaic and Vic Secret. A couple of west coast modern classics and the latter brings a little Aussie flare to the party.

This combination delivers big tangerine, mango, and apricot aromas with just the right balance of pine and resin. Crisp, clean and dry, this beer goes down easily so drink responsibly. Don’t get yourself caught in the Undertow.

568mL can. Pours clear gold with a light beige head. Resin, pine, and chewy caramel malts on the nose. Flavour has plenty of piney hops, resin, moderate bitterness, and a chewy malt backbone. Nice.

Bright amber, lasting beige head. Big musty somewhat dank hop nose and palate. Big body, good malt in back. Nice lasting hop end.

473mL can, pours a clear copper golden with a medium off-white head. Aroma is rather laid back for the style, with gentle piney hops, some resins, and bready malt. Flavour is assertive, with piney hops, some earthiness, a bit of fungal notes, some gentle metallic notes, and a bready malt base. Low on the sweetness, moderately bitter, with a tinge of that metallic character on the finish. Certainly better than the majority of hazies out there, but the hops could be better expressed. Decent.

Can from Jak's Parkcrest, Burnaby
Bright golden colour, clean. Mild resins aroma. Good body, there is close to no sweetness left, so it's quite lean, and not sticky; the malt base is a bit bready, mild caramel; the hopping is balanced, sure, the bitterness is bold, but just right, and there are resinous qualities with it.
Not very modern, but it's a solid brew.

Golden-amber with a fairly thick head. Bitter, piney, lots of biscuity malt and a fair bit of alcohol. Old school. Not bad but could stand to have a brighter hop character.
