A rich and moreish, ebony coloured Irish Oatmeal Stout. The symphony of roasted barley and dark malts deliver Cappuccino and Mocha flavours on the palate, and are complimented by the clean bitterness of Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops, leading to a velvety, dry finish.

Half-pint after a traditional breakfast. Black in the glass, a fair fawn-coloured head leaving spotty lacing on then glass. Mid-sweet doughy malts on the nose. Smooth chocolate flavours added by a coffee bite. Smooth malty finish, semi-sweet, and lightly roasted. Decent (Liverpool, 13.02.2025).

13/4/2024. Cask at the 11th Isle of Man Beer & Cider Festival. Pours black with a small frothy beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, hops, dark chocolate, coffee, slightly nutty ashy edge. Medium sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, smooth, soft carbonation. Nice roasty bittersweet finish with some liquorice and treacle coming through. Enjoyable.

Handpull cask at the King's Head, Leicester. Almost black, opaque with a small beige/khaki head. Roasted malt and espresso grounds in the aroma. Tastes sweet, notes of caramel and root liquorice. Finish is drying but this is still 'sweet' for a dry stout. Light to medium body. A new brewery for me and they don't disappoint.

Cask at Petersgate Tap, Stockport. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a medium sized foamy tan head and good lacing. Malts are the mainstay of the aroma – plus some hints of milk chocolate. In the mouth oats are the first flavour to reach the taste buds, quickly followed by roasted malts, with liquorice a poor third. Some traces of butterscotch too. At first slightly bitter, but some underlying sweetness comes through after a while. Bitterness comes back in the finish though. This is decent – but it was so cold that I really need to rerate it at a more equitable temperature.
