For this latest seasonal release we decided to get adventurous and add Carafa III to our malt bill. This black malt is one of the mellowest, without the over-the-top roasty bitterness that you find dominanting most black barleys.

Medium brown with big protein(?) chunks. Citrusy, toasty aroma with a little bit of chocolate. Very bitter...bitter hop, bitter chocolate, roast. This has to be the most assertive example of this I’ve ever had. Well, I’m down.

500mL can, pours black with a medium beige head. Nose brings out bold roasted malt, some espresso, and piney hops. Flavour is very dry and bitter, bringing out roasty malt bitterness upfront, followed by piney hops. No residual sweetness at all, with quite a pronounced astringency. Very solid black IPA.

On tap at Bailey’s Taproom. Astoria..bonus Goonies points. Hell, Kindergarten cop wasn’t terrible. Not Goonies good, but not terrible. Arnold was pretty likeable in that movie. Pours a nearly black color with a medium off-white head. A big sweet roasted coffee and pine hop nose. The flavor is more coffee, with big bitterness, some light fruit, but more solid bitter hops balanced by sweet malt and coffee. Toasty. Good.
