Complex Dark Ale brewed with Chocolate, Cocoa Nibs, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Ginger and Mexican Chili Pepper

Teaming up with Terrapin Beer Co. for the sixth time, Shmaltz Brewing returns with Reunion Ale ‘16. For 2016,Reunion was exclusively brewed at Shmaltz in Clifton Park, New York with Terrapin Brewmaster “Spike” Buckowski traveling from Georgia to Upstate NY to help brew the latest collaboration. Each year, we brew Reunion in memory of our dear friend Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise funds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research.

The Well, Brooklyn tap: pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is cocoa, vanilla, ginger, coffee and about twenty other things. Roasty and chocolatey. Spicy. Interesting.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a dark brown cola color. Small frothy beige head. Nose is full of spices. Cinnamon, cocoa and ginger. First sip is toasted malt and lot’s of spice. More cinnamon, ginger and vanilla upfront. There is a subtle underlying heat from the Chili pepper, though it is subdued at first. Midtaste brings the cocoa and more spice. Warming alcohol and pepper becomes more present. Sticky mouthfeel in finish. Herbal hops as well. Lot’s of flavors going on here. A bit overwhelming.

On tap at Rattle n Hum - East, pours a deep dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of pumpkin upfront, with caramel malt. Flavour is very spicy, full of pumpkin and nutmeg especially. Lots of depth, but too much nutmeg for my liking. Decently made for what it is.
