Our "English Bitter" collaboration with Crooked Stave has a traditional malt base with high notes of English Challenger and Fuggle hops, but fermentation with twelve different strains of Brettanomyces quickly makes it something far from ordinary. Now All Bretts Are Off.

As still WFH and I likle the stats am adding on historical ticks. When the brewery first opened they were giving away samples at a local garden centre, where I tried this.Bought at the deli in Euston on route to meeting in Leeds.

Keg at Craft. Aroma is oaty, caramel, Brett. Good stuff. Taste is good, caramel matiness, nice. Brett funkiness. Oaky. I liked this quite a bit. Nice twist on a straightforward bitter.

Appearance: Batch 446. Overflowed when opening. Cloudy dark orange golden, quite a big creamy white head.
Aroma: Old barn with miscellaneous farm animals that haven’t been looked after too diligently. Slight sourness.
Taste: Sour, but survivable. Barn, slight fruits and spices.
Bought: Beers of Europe, 330 ml, £2.49

Bottle. It’s a gusher! Nose is floral funkiness, lots of brett, slight leather, and strawberry sherbert, not much of the underlying bitter. Taste is funky, leading to leather and then a slight red berry and malt bitter taste, leading to a little grapefruit and lime rind in the finish. It’s got a very thin mouthfeel. It had a nice nose, and it’s pleasant and drinkable, perhaps not up to the usual impeccable standards of each brewer, but not bad.

Mugs Ale House, Brooklyn tap: Pours light orange with a white head. Aroma is lightly citrusy and has some sour ale must but overall is not too exciting in the aroma department. Taste was similarly uninspired. A surprisingly disappointing beer from these two brewers.

(My bottle of this frothed and fizzzed over as soon as I opened it so I might not be drinked this at it’s best.) Cloudy amber beer with a decent white head and a yeasty, malty smell to it. Flavour is floral and the yeast is there strongly again, with a sharp tangy fruit hit on the tongue. Not all that much aftertaste but it’s light, crisp and very drinkable. Not overly sour either, it’s quite mellow.
