Did you know that hedgehog numbers are in decline, with a third of urban and a half of rural populations disappearing since 2000? Old Prickly has been brewed since 2012 to support the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). Founded in 1982 and based in Shropshire, the charity aims to give advice, educate and fund research on our prickly friends.

There are lots of simple things you can do to help hedgehogs, one being to make sure they have access into your garden by providing a 13cm x 13cm gap at the bottom of, or under fences and walls. Hedgehogs will travel a mile in a night so need lots of joined up gardens

Hobsons Brewery donated to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society £50 for every Old Prickly brew from 2012 to 2019; we have donated in excess of £46,000!

The snuffly hedge grog is a pale ale full of hop flavour and brewed with Columbus and Lubelski hops to give this beer a complex flavour of floral and citrus notes. Locally sourced Maris Otter malting barley is used to brew this beer which has become a firm favourite and permanent beer.

Bottle Notes - Old Prickly is a bottle conditioned beer which contains sediment, pour carefully and best stored upright at cellar temperature 10 - 12 degrees.

Cask at the Old Windmill, Coventry on 31st October 2025. Clearish golden amber with shallow yet dense white foam and partial lacing. Spicy, pungent aroma. Spiced fruitiness in-mouth, and a finish of hazelnut malts with spiced fruits. Some bitterness in the mix. Velvet smooth mouthfeel and a full body.

Cask at Pickled Pig, Stafford though I have drunk it before. Pours golden amber with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s nuts, floral hops and general bitterness in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite bitter (but not overwhelmingly so) with a texture that varies between creamy and watery. Flavour has traditional hops, oranges and autumn fruits with traces of citrus peel and kiwi coming through later. Finish is slightly dry. This is decent.

Bottled. Amber colour, small foamy white head, which stays for a while. Aroma is floral, wooden, some bready and mild caramel malts. Flavour has the same elements as the aroma, but also some slight toasted and biscuity notes to it.

Bottle online from The Hobsons Brewery. Pours an almost clear amber colour with a medium sized throthy white head. Light aromas of floral, biscuits and a hint of citrus. Taste is again floral and biscuit with more pronounced citrus notes, some added peppery spice with an earthy and slightly grassy hop on the finish. Thinnish slightly watery mouthfeel. it’s pretty good without being outstanding.

Clear gold with a frothy white head and a mellow biscuity malt aroma, with some citrus notes. Light to medium bodied with maybe a touch of graininess to the mouthfeel, it's a decent enough golden ale with light malt, some citrus character and a touch of bitterness, just lacking something really
