Oats bring a creaminess and soft mouth-feel to the roast malt character in our classic oatmeal stout. The Poet is a perfect representation of balance and one of America’s leading oatmeal stouts.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 08/25/2011. Pours crystal clear almost opaque dark brown color with a nice 2-3 finger dense tan head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap that lasts the whole glass. Some spotty lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, oats, nuttiness, light coffee, and a bit of spicy hops. Nice and well balanced aromas here with decent strength. Taste of chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, light coffee, oats, and spicy hops. Good amount of spicy hop bitterness on the finish. A bit on the dry side; but there are some lingering notes of chocolate, caramel, light coffee, and spices on the finish for a bit. Medium body and carbonation; with a fairly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel that drinks extremely easily. Nice balance of flavors and bitterness; with a fairly robust flavor profile. Pretty much zero alcohol presence noticed. Overall this is a damn nice and straight forward oatmeal stout. Nice robust flavors, balance, and easy drinking make this a session beer I would get again.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into an English Pint. Pours black with zero head. Strong aroma of chocolate with a slight hint of coffee. Taste is lightly bitter. Very nice coffee taste with some slight chocolate. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin texture. Soft carbonation and a long coffee finish. Overall, very good. I will be drinking this again in the future.

Marvin’s, DC bottle ($7): Pours a black colour with a brownish head. Aroma of coffee, a little bit of chocolate, and roasted malts. Body was thinner than expected and that left the beer to be a thin experience overall. However, the chocolate and coffee tastes were quite good and the tastes were balanced overall. This would be a good stout to session because it isn’t hard to drink like some of the more bitter stouts out there. Not outstanding, but good.

On tap as part of a sampler at the New Holland Brewery in Holland, MI. Appearance pretty much black but a bit of color so I’ll go with a dirty brown, rich creamy head that laces to the glass. Aroma very nice and subtle, definitely encapsulates the roasted and chocolate malts nicely, also a small bit of lactose possibly that I’m noticing (I do have a head cold though...). Taste nice and smooth, great finish, more chocolatey than roasty but not entirely decadent. Great balance, above average oatmeal stout.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 9/12/10
Aroma: The nose is malty (sweet and roasted), quite chocolaty, with some fruit notes as well
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with small tan head that leaves some streaky lace
Flavor: The taste is also rather rich, chocolaty and malty, with a light hop backing
Palate: This brew has a smooth/creamy mouthfeel, is medium bodied, and a drop watery
Overall Impression: Overall, this was a pretty solid roasted malt brew, but it didn't have a ton of oatmeal to it from what I could find. I found a lot more of a roasted/chocolaty flavor then I did oatmeal. It's also a drop on the watery side for the style. It was still a decent beer, but I wouldn't call it a stand-out.

Draft @ New Holland Brewery. Dark brown colour, brown head. Aroma of slight roastiness and chocolate. Flavour is smooth roasted malts, and a bit of bitter coffee. One of the better sweet stouts I’ve had.
