Oats bring a creaminess and soft mouth-feel to the roast malt character in our classic oatmeal stout. The Poet is a perfect representation of balance and one of America’s leading oatmeal stouts.

Bottle at home ... Big thanks to Beer Bill for this ... black ... think bubbly tan head ... light sweet roast malts with a little chocolate ... bit thin in palate .... dark berries and cherries ... little creamy ... little oatmeal ... little coffee ... tasty but just lacking a bit in body.

Pitch black body, only a little dark brown comes through when held up to a light. Nice dense tan head takes its place rather slowly when poured. Aroma of strong roasted malt, oatmeal, vanilla, cookies, chocolate and a bit of coffee - this is VERY nice! Medium-bodied. Strong taste of coffee in the immediate flavour with a bit of bitter malt and a ton of oatmeal following behind. Aftertaste shows some lactic qualities, a bit of oak and vanilla and even a hint of tobacco. Overall, a very nice beer - definitely good for the category and probably one of the better oatmeals youll find! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norms in Vienna, Virginia on 25-November-2008, sampled on 07-December-2008 at home in Washington.

(10/26/08) Bottle at Barcade in Brooklyn. Black-colored with a small light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, some chocolate and vanilla notes. Sweet flavor with roasted malt, chocolate, caramel notes and some oatmeal. Medium-bodied and a very carbonated palate. A nice Stout. 7/4/7/3/13.5

This stout poured a deep black colour with a short lived, tan coloured head. Scents include coffee, roasted malts, caramel and cocoa. First taste was smooth and roasty with flavours of coffee and roasted malt. Other flavours include caramel, cocoa and nuts. Finish is roasted and palate is slightly bitter coffee/caramel.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with an average size foamy head with average retention but good lacing. Aroma consists of medium sweet chocolate with some light coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by light roasted malt notes with some medium sweet chocolates notes offset by some dry coffee. Full body with some medium carbonation. Very well done for the style and easily drinkable.

Pours dark brown with no head. Roasted malts, oats, chocolate malt, dark fruits, and vanilla for an aroma. Thin and light dry body. Roasted oats, bitter cocoa, some vanilla in the flavor. Nice stout, though I wish the body was a bit creamier.

12 oz bottle...pours dark brown with a light brown head thats not very prominent....light chocolate and toffee aromas, also light roasted malt...a pleasant body with just a slight carbonation...a light slightly sweet malt and toffee flavor...beer is too cold...so i let it sit for about 15-20 mins...a little chocolate, some milky malt flavors, but still light overall...a touch of molasses ....a light easy to drink stout, a little let down by it...its got a little bit too much wateriness to it for my taste

Sampled at the Savor DC event. Pours a watery, opaque black with a sweet aroma of nuts and toasted grain. Flavor has coffee, nuts, and sweet, chewy malts. Very drinkable.

I used to like this one a lot more back when there was a chocolate element that has disappeared. +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was dry roasty malts, bitter coffee and floral hops. The flavor was dryish, bitter and roasty with light notes of coffee, wood and floral hops. Long finish. Medium body. Meh.
