We decided to kick off a little series of stouts to feature local coffee roasters, and selfishly, to observe the results of different beans in beer. We kept the ABV relatively low, the body chewy and voluptuous, and let the coffee do most of the talking.
Our newest version is made with Sam James Ethiopia Tega & Tula (its tasting notes are: marmalade, lemon glaze, caramel), and it hits all the marks for good body, sweetness, and all-around coffee flavour.

473mL bottle, pours black with a medium light brown head. Aroma reveals a nice roasty coffee character upfront, with a soft earthy malt backbone. Flavour is light and fluffy on the mouthfeel, with a nicely roasted coffee character upfront, and a soft pillowy malt backbone. Very soft on the mouthfeel, despite the coffee imparting some nice elements. Good stuff.

(473ml can from the Ossington bottle shop) Pours black with a small fine pale tan head and lace. Aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans dominate, with tones of citrus, a little toffee and nuts. Flavour is equally coffee dominated, the balance of a lightly sweet roast with oranges and toffee up front but with an ashy bitter finish. Stout body is light and in the background. Bitter earthy coffee finish. Light body, a bit watery, average carbonation. The coffee here is no doubt good, the underlying stout is underwhelming. I like it because I like the coffee, but I could have a good cold brew!
