Stout - Pastry / Flavoured - Imperial Regular

A hefty Imperial Stout, with subtle additions of piloncillo sugar and orange, that was aged for 6 months in a Rye Whiskey barrel and 6 months in the bottle. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, citrus as well as molasses and oaken spice are present. Let it warm out of the fridge slightly to get maximum flavour.

Black colour, beige head, compact. Aroma of dark malts, pomegranate molasses, whiskey. The mouthfeel is lean, it's soft, smooth; maybe a tad overcarbonated; good flavour of dark sugars and caramel, it doesn't have the malt depth of most recent Imperial Stouts, but it has elegance; the barrel presence is massive, there is whiskey flavour and alcohol, warming; the finish is a bit weaker than desired. Well made, very good, elegant, a different take from the crowd.

Re-rate: poured from the tap. Black with small beige head. Earthy wood, slightly soured coffee, light nuts and chocolate. More pleasant than previous tasting and doesn’t have the green pepper note this time. An interestingly forest-y stout (like a forest hike was injected into a stout). Jan 31, 2022 ( 6/3/6/3/12=3.0): Poured from 650mL bottle (from Jonny, Weathered leftover). Dark brown with beige head. Green pepper and nuts on the aroma. Odd rye whiskey note, mild chocolate and roast, slightly soured, feel like this was oxidized. Disappointed.

Dark brown/near black. No head. The aroma is spicy - is that the rye whiskey? It's certainly unusual. On the palate, the base beer comes up thin. Some chocolate, bit fudgey. But the dominant character is something between rye whiskey, and leftover piloncillo. It's not the rich piloncillo character I want, mind you. I am not sure what role the orange is playing here. Well, Steel & Oak does most things well, so if their imperial stouts aren't heroic I don't really care.

Bottle at Weathered 2022, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of orange peel, burnt sugar and some rye whiskey character. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of orange peel and burnt sugars, accentuated by the earthy whiskey character. Earthy and spicy, with a nice burnt sugar finish. Not the best local BA impie, but pretty solid.

A pour at I hope not a super spreader event Weathered. Appearance: almost black with beige head. Aroma: weird unriped nuts with a light sweetness. Taste: a bit better, but along the same lines, like a mix of unriped nuts and roasted malt with chocolate. Overall: nah, it's meh.
