Black Walnut Stout

The process of brewing big burley stouts and placing them into bourbon barrels intended for the brewery's anniversary is something that we look forward to each year, and this year is no exception. That said, we wanted to produce something a bit different, a bit out of the ordinary. Where's Walno is exactly what you want it to be, a big, bold, and robust barrel-aged imperial stout with additions of decadent vanilla, earthy cinnamon, and some smokey black walnut, this release is sure to transport you to new landscapes. Did you find him yet?

12 oz can poured, gifted by mcberko. Thanks! Dark and dense dark brown appearance. Moderate dark tan foam. Smooth flavor, especially for its strength, with lots of vanilla, maple, almond and walnut, some chocolate linger on the palate. Aroma is a cocoa, maple, and nutty chocolate. A touch dusty with the cocoa. Dessert without being too sweet. Subtle whiskey masked behind a sturdy caramel, vanilla, and maple. Delicious stout all around here.

12oz (thx for pick-up, Alex!) @ 🏡 Appearance: dark brown with a huge but quickly disappearing beige head. Aroma: lots of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, slight alcohol warmth. Very nice. Reminded me Gold Foil. Taste: bourbon, chocolate, some berries. Alcohol warmth and walnut syrup finish. People were complaining it is less thick than previous BBA stouts from TS. Maybe. But it also a bit more carbonated than them and this could decrease the thickness, I believe. Overall: good one.

Dark brown. Medium head. Lots of vanilla, chocolate and barrel on the nose. Maybe cinnamon. Thick body. Nice and rich, although the vanilla bomb kind of detracts from it by giving it a childish kind of aspect. Granted, sometimes I like that and sometimes I don't; I guess today I don't. Soft body. Sweet chocolate, light cinnamon that shows mostly at the front of the palate as spiciness. Maybe I lack knowledge of black walnut but I don't get anything I'd call as walnut, and no smoke either. Gonna want more of that.

On tap at Twin Sails, pours black with a medium brown head. Aroma is full of walnut extract, dark sugars, and intense bourbon. Flavour is very rich, with an intense bourbon character, dark sugars, some awkward walnut extract character, and a strange liquorice-y, almost perfumey fruitiness. I don't really get much cinnamon, although maybe that's contributing to the liquorice and fruit characters. Boozy but integrated, finishing almost like a cocktail more than a beer. It's got lots of elements, but I'm not very sold on the flavours. Good but doesn't work that well for me.

When colder and just opened, there is a bit too much liquorice; then it get's mellower; it's moderately sweet, but not even enough facing the massive alcohol content; dark chocolate and roasted malt; a bit herbal, some tobacco, even light astringency; it may have some similarities with a Nocino, but it doesn't taste like walnut.I think I'm less impressed than when I had it from tap, still pretty tasty and complex.

Black, the head disappears quickly. Strong aroma of chocolate, Bourbon, maybe walnuts. Good body, sweet, but the alcohol is strong here, it dominates the sugars; dark chocolate flavour, the walnut is more evident initially, then it morphs into sweet liquorice (light), goes on till the finish, still juggling between alcohol and sugars.
Excellent.
