Skeleton Key is an imperial stout aged for just over a year in rum barrels, with a mix of ginger, all spice, black pepper cardamom, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, juniper berries, and vanilla. The resulting beer is an intense showcase of dark chocolate, caramelized malts, spirit barrel, and lively spices.
This 2019 variant is conditioned on Guatemala Providencia beans from Hale Coffee Roasters, cacao nibs, and toasted coconut.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 5 May 2024) Black colour with creamy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, sweet espresso, raisins, rum, coconut, oak wood, caramel and a touch of cinnamon. Malty, roasted taste with espresso, dark chocolate, treacle, rum, vanilla, oak wood, coconut, raisins and a balanced cacao bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. Rich, tasty and warming. Still in excellent balance. Great beer!

On tap at Bellwoods, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma has that usual indescribable array of spices, tons of rum barrels, but I don't notice the additional adjuncts in this special edition. Flavour brings out an army of spices, with lots of rum barrels topping this off. I mean, that's a shitload of spices and I can't really make beads or tails of this. It's fun but is far from elegant or refined. It's alright.
