Barrel 437 is a single barrel Spontaneous Grape Ale and a collaboration with Still Fields — a brewery started by Owen, our friend and former colleague. After a night in the coolship, the wort was added to freshly pressed Cab Franc skins, combining the wild yeast from these two sources. This hybrid elixir was fermented and aged in a single neutral French oak puncheon. The resulting beer is a happy (and delicious) meeting point of spontaneous beer and natural wine. Notes of grapefruit rind, green pepper, and strawberry jam, with assertive acidity.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours a clear reddish orange, with a medium white head. Aroma is tart, red wine vinous, lactic notes, subtle citrus zest. Dry mouth feel, tart, and soft carb. Medium funk, vinous, acidic, grapefruit pith, cab grapes, a bit earthy, with some leather.

Lovely funky and vinous nose. Taste is tart funky grapes, and a little cherry. Acerbic but fairly balanced. Really nice.

Poured from 500mL bottle (pkg 07 Apr 2022). Hazy golden orange with dissipating white head. Nice wild yeast, feint vinous notes, oak, some bugs. Enjoyable.

500mL bottle, pours a clear bright golden with a large, rapidly diminishing white head. Nose is hugely expressive, exuding lots of complex wild yeast, musty grape skins, loads of vinous notes, and oak. Flavour is assertive, with lots of vinous notes, plenty of oak, champagne-like effervescence, and wild yeast. Carbonation is aggressive but fitting with the wild bugs and grape must. Smells even better than it tastes, but it still tastes damn good. Excellent.
