‘Tis a tale of shared passion, mojo and simpatico that spells the impetus of this fine, collaboratively birthed IPA. Picture it, Washington, D.C., May 2014: Brewers hailing from both sides of the country find each other in a tightly packed room. They share beers, stories, and laughs, forming a friendship that will stretch far beyond SAVOR, the two-day beer-and-food fete that’s brought them together. Skip ahead to fall of the same year and it’s plain to see, 2014 has been a good year for both factions, with Coronado Brewing Company being named Champion Mid-Sized Brewing Co. and Brewmaster at the World Cup and Devils Backbone Brewing Company capturing Champion Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. Such feats are made to be celebrated and, in the brewing industry, beer is how that’s done. This is the first of two collaboration beers this dynamic duo will brew—an IPA given bright citrus and tropical fruit character care of Centennial and Mosaic hops, plus a burst of woody rusticity from Northern Brewer. Consider it Chapter One to an epic saga that’s only getting started.

65 cl bottle @ Sankt Hans Tasting, Ulfborg Aroma has interesting cinnamon tones, some fruits and juice. Flavour has cinnamon, pineapple juice and some caramel. A bit sticky and sweet. And stuffy with all the spiciness. Like a punk IPA made musty with cinnamon.

Poured into a taster showing amber whiskey hues and a finger of clean foam. Well filtered. The nose shows a large amount of mildly sweet malts surrounded by hints of tropical fruit and cannabis. The palate is surprisingly fruit forward (mostly pineapple) with a medium sharp IPA bitterness at the end. Light bodied and highly carbonated. A slight spice on the finish. Not bad, just a simple easy to drink IPA.

22oz bomber pours with a clear copper body that supports a somewhat thin off white head. The aroma offers up a pleasing blend of mango, pineapple, earthy tea and some spicy smelling dank onion off in the background. It doesn’t seem like these notes should work but they do work very well. The taste delivers juicy mango and pineapple fruitiness that flows quickly into spicy bitter onion dankness that mingles with herbal to earthy tea notes. The bitter vs juicy play and flavor nuances work well together. I’m really enjoying the tug and pull as this tries to go in different directions but maintains a pleasing harmony.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/6/2015. Pours fairly crystal clear deep golden color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, mango, peach, pepper, pine, bread, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pepper, pine, bread, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, pineapple, peach, mango, pine, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPA. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
