‘Tis a tale of shared passion, mojo and simpatico that spells the impetus of this fine, collaboratively birthed IPA. Picture it, Washington, D.C., May 2014: Brewers hailing from both sides of the country find each other in a tightly packed room. They share beers, stories, and laughs, forming a friendship that will stretch far beyond SAVOR, the two-day beer-and-food fete that’s brought them together. Skip ahead to fall of the same year and it’s plain to see, 2014 has been a good year for both factions, with Coronado Brewing Company being named Champion Mid-Sized Brewing Co. and Brewmaster at the World Cup and Devils Backbone Brewing Company capturing Champion Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. Such feats are made to be celebrated and, in the brewing industry, beer is how that’s done. This is the first of two collaboration beers this dynamic duo will brew—an IPA given bright citrus and tropical fruit character care of Centennial and Mosaic hops, plus a burst of woody rusticity from Northern Brewer. Consider it Chapter One to an epic saga that’s only getting started.

Bomber from Total Wine Tampa.

Pour is a clear yellow with a average white head. Aroma has a mix of piney hops and a sweet caramel malt in the backround. Flavor is more of a earthy but sweet malt with a very small amount of the hops showing. Here is another IPA where the malts used was overpower the hops. There is not dating on the bottle so I can’t tell if this is old but I’m sure it has to be b/c this is more of a malt bomb than hop bomb.

650ml bottle. Clear, deep golden colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Piney and citrusy hoppy aroma, notes of lemon and lemon zest. Taste is bitter and citrusy hoppy, slightly sweet biscuity malty basis, a touch of caramel, lemon notes. Would expect some more tropical fruitiness from the Mosaic.

Sampled in a horizontal tasting with the version from the East Coast. Nice super clear golden coloured body with a slight peach tint and a thinnish tan head. Aroma of earthy malt, mushrooms, alcohol, funky light hops, metal and a hint of caramel. Medium-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal notes throughout with a large malt backbone and a twang of metal on the finish. Aftertaste shows caramel sweetness with only a touch of hops and a more pungent bite than most IPAs in general. Overall, a decent beer with a very earthy and pungent flavour showing some caramel, but not a typical IPA at all. Compared to the East Coast version, this is a more malty, less ’traditional-to-style’ beer with more malt than hops, but of course, is also not using roasted malts, hence the regular IPA style for this. That said, I preferred the East Coast version to this one, which was a surprise to me. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington, DC on 12-March-2015 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington on 27-June-2015.
