Mare, or Sea in Italian highlights the terroir of coastal British Columbia. Made in collaboration with our friends at Land and Sea Brewing Company on Vancouver Island. This unique style of Pilsner breaks out of its shell with 100% Vancouver Island Pilsner malt from Field Five Farm and 100% local Sterling hops from our friends at Barnside Brewing. Oyster shells from Fanny Bay were used to modify the water profile giving Mare a nice salinity and a complex minerality. It pours a bright straw-yellow with a pearly white head. Expect aromas of the ocean alongside bright lemon and fresh cut grass. With its medium body and smooth mouthfeel from the natural carbonation, Mare is shore to be your perfect companion for sunny days by the sea.

Draft at brewery. Yellow gold pour. Frothy white head. Grainy malt aroma has notes of cut grass. Flavor is grainy malt, lemon pith, lite minerality. Clean and crisp. Bitter, dry finish and aftertaste.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma has a slightly earthy oyster with hay and a touch of grass coming through. Flavor has straw and grass with a bit of earthy oyster in the finish.

On tap at brewery. Pours mostly clear yellow with white head. Aroma has some light briny notes; a bit herbal. Flavour has a touch of salt, some grassy/herbal hops, some light malts. Not bad, but nothing too great either. The saline notes feel a bit out of place here.

On tap at Luppolo, pours a clear pale golden blonde with a medium white head. Aroma reveals gentle briny notes from the oyster, along with very restrained herbal, grassy hops. Flavour doesn't really reveal the brine, maybe a touch of salt — but that's probably hallucinatory; there's light herbal hops and some straw. Very restrained and under-hopped, but clean enough. It's alright.

Oyster pilsner. Slow pour frothed up but died quick. Dull gold body. Grassy, with lots of pale malt. Soft malt, maybe slight saline but that's probably the power of suggestion. Medium bitterness and hop grassiness, about right for Sterling. Good pils, fairly medium, but again reflecting good technique.
