Past Masters 1914 Strong X has been brewed by Fuller’s master brewers to a recipe that dates back to 4th August 1914, the day war was declared, which was found in Fuller’s brew book. Every recipe of every beer ever brewed at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick has been recorded in meticulous details in this bible of brewing. This brew, back in 1914, was just called X.
X Ale was colloquially known as "Four Ale" in London because it cost 4d a pint. It was a mild ale, however, 2014 Past Masters has been made slightly stronger at 7.3% ABV. The same raw materials have been used: pale ale malt, Brewer’s invert syrup No3 and dark syrup to give the sugars for fermentation. The hops include Goldings and Fuggles from England, although they may have been sourced from Belgium in the original brew in 1914.

For the style, it is a delightful strong ale not burning at 100% your throat, nice touch of malt, sugar, hop, a bit metalic, 03.11.17, at Prélaz, purchased at Crissier.

500ml bottle. Cloudy, copper-ish brown colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Sweet-ish, caramel malty aroma, hints of toffee, cautious fruity hoppy overtones with a touch of red berries and marmalade. Taste is mellow malty, slightly fruity hoppy, minimally sugary sweet, hints of apricot, plum and maramalade, some caramel and toffee. Relatively light and (re-)fresh(-ing).

(Bottle) Pale amber colour with frothy beige head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, orange, crisp-bread, treacle-toffee, apricot marmalade and some honey. Malty taste with dried fruit, orange peel, caramel, rye bread, toffee, apricot marmalade, toasted cereal, candy sugar, raisins, some honey and a gentle bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. A bit sweet, but tasty and well balanced with alcohol well hidden. Quite nice.

(bottle) Slightly hazy, deep golden to amber colour with a short and slightly off-white foamy head. Mildly vinous fruity nose with notes of dried fruits/raisins, also hints of caramel and oak honey. Moderately sweet flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Honey-ish and juicy malt character with notes of dried fruits, mildly bready accents, accompanied by mildly spicy flavours of cinnamon towards the moderately sweet and slightly hop bitter finish. Not the best but still a quaffable brew by Fullers. 11.I.18

Bottle: Deep golden to light amber coloured, not completely clear, smaller firm and stable head; sweet nose of raisins, sweet malt and herbal hops, some X-mas spices (?) in the background; pretty sweet flavour, medium to full bodied; slightly lingering and slightly drier malty and leafy finish. Not bad, but too monotonous and a bit disappointing by Fuller's standards...

A bottle at home picked up from boote shop? A clear copper nut brown coloured pour with a lasting off white froth. Aroma holds lots of jammy sponge cake, toffee, light soap, brown sugars. Flavour is composed of medium sweet, layered malts, run and raisin , Victoria sponge. Some unrefined sugars and treacle notes in the finish. Palate is medium full bodied, sticky, moderate carbonation. Slight bitter metallic in the finish. Really nice malty beverage.

BBE, end 2017. Beautiful and copper colour, a head is small and blond. Aroma has raisins, dates, apricot, thus intensive and dried fruitness is dominating, also some maltyness of toffee and strenght of alcohol. Taste has same elements than in the aroma, dried apricot, dates, mild toffee. Medium bodied, low carbonation, nicely smooth. High quality beer, intensive and concentrated dried fruitness.
