Bourbon barrel-aged Belgian-style golden ale with pineapple and spices – 15.3% ABV

5 Golden Rings is the only golden ale in our 12 Days of Christmas series. We spiced up the natural pause in the classic song with cinnamon, allspice, and ginger that play harmoniously with notes of burnt wood and sweet and under-ripe fruit from the time spent in bourbon barrels.

Tasting at Matt’s
Cloudy dull amber color with small head. Aroma of alcohol, rotten fruits, Bourbon. Sweet, incredibly boozy, the Bourbon just crash the party and it makes it worse, a bit herbal, with a final that tastes like saccharin.
Weird, (almost) undrinkable.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy murky orange with a small white head. Nose brings out loads of pineapple upfront, with cinnamon, allspice and ginger. Flavour is all over the place, with sour pineapples, mint, cinnamon, and herbal notes. Very, very messy, and discordant in all its flavours. Quite nasty.

On tap at Pangaea. Thick, sticky, murky copper pour. The little bit of head clings to the ring of the glass, afraid to go any further. Rum barrel notes greet the nose, taste should be done in sips, strong taste and finish, warmth from the get-go. Slow going but worth it.

Tap at Gingerman. nose is super bourbon and vanilla. Tastes of vanilla through the ying yang and so much bourbon sweetness, if you dig through those two overpowering flavors you may find some canned fruit cocktail, malt, and lemon. Way sweet and boozy. Bit heavy handed.

750 ml bottle RS purchase. Color is different from the standard version. This has a hazy brown color with light ring of head.

Unlike the standard base beer the pineapple is subdued and the flavor is helped greatly by the Bourbon barrel. The spice is also less dominate which is a huge plus. The flavor profile is deeper, mango, Belgian yeast notes, mild vanilla oak and brown sugar. The body is still light just like the standard base brew but less sweetness. The 16 % only shows itself by a light warming after the sip. I enjoy this a lot more than the base version.

Bottle shared at the RBESG ’14, Grander Tasting @ Moncada, 09/08/14 thanks to our Kenny. Hazed orange amber with a moderate off white swirl and edgeing. Nose is spice, subtle BA wash, earthy, bitter orange, pumpkin notes, woody tones. Taste comprises candied fruit peel, sweet, rich booze notes, canned tropical fruits, trace of oaky bourbon. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the close. Ok, hides the 16% very well but ultimately doesn’t deliver the flavours to justify the ABV.
