Keg at the brewpub. Very black and impenetrable, with a creamy ring of khaki head. Smell is agreeable but not very IPA-y: I’m getting liquorice and rosewater with some chocolatey tangents. Same sort of gripe with the taste: bittersweet and shot through with spicy liquorice but lacking an attractive hope character. Long boozy finish. Black raspberry and even more liquorice in the aftertaste. Not a great representation of the style but that’s not how we rate. On purely hedonic terms it’s certainly tasty enough, but fairly forgettable and slightly too boozy for what it is.
