A bit shallow for an imperial stout, with roasted malt notes offset by java, soy, and licorice, but none are prominent enough for Theophan to make an impression among a crowded style. Nothing runs deep; a slight sweetness adds milk chocolate towards the middle, but the back end quickly fades to a bitter roasted finish with meager traces of soy and dark fruit. Texture's thin for an imperial stout, but at least the booze is hidden. Chocolate, roast, and soy on the nose. Pours a watery black with a dark brown head and slight lacing. Many, many better options are out there.

Sample at the Decatur Craft Beer Fest. Pours black, with a big, bubbly, tan head. The aroma is molasses, dates, coffee, and semi-sweet chocolate. The flavor is very sweet, with only a light burnt malt bitterness in the finish. Medium body, sticky, and a little too astringent. Despite the slightly unpleasant mouthfeel, this is a good, balanced, complex stout. Nicely done!
