Session Black Lager

A dark black lager with bold roasted malt and faint citrus hop aromas. Robust flavors of burnt cocoa and roasted espresso barely give way to some mild orange and grapefruit hoppiness. The light body and crisp nature of this unique lager allows for a showcased bitterness that seems delayed at first, but builds to a powerful finish.

Poured into a pilsner glass, the appearance was a dark black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head. Slow dissipation, moderate stringy lace.
The aroma had some smooth semi-bitter coffee grounds flowing over a light chocolate with a light bready/yeastiness. Some crisp citrus hops.
The flavor leans to the coffee grounds and chocolate and bready/yeastiness. Same smooth yeasty/bready aftertaste with the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a great sessionability about it. Low to medium carbonation. Very smooth in the texture.
Overall, decent Schwarzbier, mostly Americanized to probably try and get the hopheads to give this a whirl, but the more hops mostly distract from the true nature of this style. Though, would I have again? Actually, I think I would .

Aroma has some lightly roasted malts. The flavour is strong and bitter with lots of burnt malt and coffee. A light hoppy finish helps keeps it fresh enough to be a genuine session beer.

Bottle shared by Erwin Van Moll @ Brewpub Van Moll during the bottling of Benzai’s 10k beer. Dark brown to black color with a nice deep dark red glare coming through when held into the light, medium sized beige head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma is malts, hops and roast blended together nicely. Taste malts, roasted malts, bitter, hop lightly, hop bitter, dark malts, ash. Very nice mix of two different styles. Very well done imo!

Bottle. A dark brown beer, lighlty unclear, topped by a dense, light beige head. The aroma has a roasted, toffeeish touch reminding of popcorn that have spent too much time over heat. Quite fruity too, with cocoa hints, burnt notes and some coffee hints. Medium body and a pleasant carbonation level. Quite dry. Lasting finish with quite a lot of coffee. Hard to pin what style this is, but it’s sure a fine session beer. 141219
