Spekkoek is a very tasty and densely layered cake with spices from Indonesian Archipelago. Most likely a product of European pastry and Indonesian flavours and popularised in the colonial period. Today it is a popular treat in both the Netherlands and Indonesia. We drew inspiration from its unique flavour to make this seasonal Spiced Ale.
A rich malty base is spiced with the flavours of the added spekkoek and spices to create a nice warming beer for the colder months of the year.

33cl bottle from a trade with ShivanDragon, many thanks. A slightly hazy reddish amber beer with a small off-white head. Aroma of speculatios, cinnamon, christmas spices. Taste of sweet christmas spices, Lebkuchen, cinnamon, herbs, crazy!

Tap at Foeders. Clear amber with creamy beige head. Lots of spekkoek indeed, speculaas, sugary sweet cinnamon candy- the red striped ones. Some sweet malts and soft roast. Quite sweet and soft bitter. Medium bodied. Great pastry ale!

Bottle. Brown pour. Aroma of cinnamon, speculaas, malt, raisin and dates. Taste has sweet dates, speculaas, malt, lots of cinnamon, raisin, ripe fruit and something savory. Actually tastes like spekkoek, without being artificial. Very nice.

8 3 8 4 16 Draft at Kromme Haring, Utrecht. Clear amber brown with a light tan head. Aroma of kruidkoek, speculaas, nutmeg, cinnamon, malt and dark fruity notes. Flavour is above moderate sweet and light moderate bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Not exactly shy on the spice but for me it works.
