Spekkoek is a very tasty and densely layered cake with spices from Indonesian Archipelago. Most likely a product of European pastry and Indonesian flavours and popularised in the colonial period. Today it is a popular treat in both the Netherlands and Indonesia. We drew inspiration from its unique flavour to make this seasonal Spiced Ale.
A rich malty base is spiced with the flavours of the added spekkoek and spices to create a nice warming beer for the colder months of the year.

Bottle. Brown color. Nutmeg, cinnamon, caramel in the aroma and flavor. Malty sweet. Raisin. Drinkable, considering the shitload of spices added.

Fles thuis geprobeerd met LiekevdV. Het is een oranje bruinig bier met een volle schuimkraag. Het heeft een kruidige wat kaneel achtige geur. De smaak is kaneel achtig en spekkoek achtig, ja 't kan echt!

Een kruidige rakker. Spekkoek, Kapitein Koek en taai taai. Als de sint dit drinkt heeft ie een schone onderbroek nodig.

On tap at Helst. Brown colour, beige head. Aroma of pure spekkoek, lots of ground clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, some brown sugar, toast, dates. Flavour is medium sweet, very spicy, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cookies, dates, light roast, decent spicy bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Good, well done.

Bottle. Color: Reddish brwn, off-white head. Aroma: Strongly spicy, cloves, cinnamon. Taste: Malty with strong spicy notes. Cloves, cinnamon and nutmag. Moderate to medium sweet, hints of vanilla and sugary notes. Over medium body, just below average carbonation. Spicy palate at finish. Spicy Spekkoek indeed. Nice to try this beer, but drinking a whole bottle is already a bit hard for me.

Draught @ Helst. Amberish colour, slightly hazy. Dense off white head with good lacing. Aroma's: spices, notably clove, cinnamon and some pepper, light sweet. Retronasal: sweetish, spices. Flavour is light sweet with some bitterness from the spices. Light medium bodied. Finish with spices, moderate bitter.

(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 22 Feb 2018) Amber colour with foamy, white head. Fruity, spicy nose with notes of caramel, orange peel and lots of spices and herbs (cinnamon at least...). Fruity, spicy taste with caramel, candy sugar, coriander, cinnamon, spices, herbs and a mild bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Different, with lots of spices. But tasty and nice.

spekkoek ale, lichte gusher, licht bruin met rode gloed, te veel co2, aroma van anijs, gember, kaneel, kruidnagel, nootmuskaat, behoorlijk kruidig allemaal, smaken vrij veel co2, té veel eigenlijk, kaneel, nootmuskaat, mout, iets scherp, dun, maar ik vind het geen geslaagde combi.

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, BB 11-2019. Almost clear copper color, big rocky head. Aroma is stacked with spices and a bit of toffee and toasted malts. Very spicy in taste as well, bit too high on carbonation, which together with the spices makes the beer quite dry. Slight sweet toast and marmalade. Even though it is heavy on the spices, it doesnt seem out of balance. Enjoyable.
