A Style-defying Double IPA with Cacao & Coffee

Clearly, style lines have been crossed. Is it half-IPA, half-stout? Not quite. It’s definitely all IPA, but it’s also the best of both styles, making this love child of a beer simply just a beautiful, pleasure-seeking meld of imperial IPA and mocha indulgence. How did we come up with this inexplicably delicious creation? Well, that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that it exists and that it’s here for you now, thanks to our deliberate disregard for brewing norms. Some things are not meant to be known, just enjoyed...thoroughly.

Liberty Station Brewing Manager Kris Ketcham was inspired by two beers to create this wonderful IPA. Aleman / Two Brothers / Stone DayMan Coffee IPA and Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise golden stout triggered an inspiration in Kris to brew an IPA with both coffee and cocoa influence. When he first brewed this in 2015, it was an instant smash hit. And now we’ve found a great home for it!

Big full body sweet with a shit ton of oranges and mocha. Tons of coffee. Very interesting. Big bitterness. Love it but half pint is enough.

Bottle, 355 ml, on a train from LA to Oceanside. Hazy orange, off-white head. Fruity, hoppy, orange, pine, lots of coffee in aroma and taste, sweetish with lasting dry bitter finish. Medium+ bodied. Coffee well integrated into IPA.

Strangely alluring DIPA, dipping a toe in stout-like chocolate roasty goodness, but playing these elements off your typical bright Stone hop bomb. Starts with a quick burst of orange-tangerine sweetness, then quickly dives into mocha territory, coffee and cocoa adding dark beer depth to the IPA. Never begins to resemble a black IPA, however; the mocha accentuates the hops without overtaking them. Finishes with a firm piney bitterness, bitter baker’s chocolate circling the clingy IBUs. Much more well-rounded and accessible than their previous Enjoy By IPA with Coffee and Chocolate. A bit sandpapery on the finish, but the alcohol’s mostly hidden and the subtle sweetness grows as it warms. Tasty brew.

Tap at Dogs Bollocks. Hazy amber with white head. Big sweet syruppy malty, with a lot of mocha and firm coffee notes. Big sweet, moderate bitter. Over medium body, big malty, gelly, soft and creamy with soft carbonation. Quite nice!

On tap at Stone Brewing Berlin. Comes with a cloudy orange color and a nice white head. The nose has a lot of dark roasted coffee, ripe fruits of peach and apricot, some bitter orange-peel. something very refreshing, nice hops. Taste is nice as well: Dark coffee, lots of sweet fruits in the beginning, followed by more bitter ctitrus-peels. Dark coffe and chocoloat. Nice dry hops and fruit finish! Yeah!

(Keg at Sori Taproom, 20170226) The beer poured deep amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had pine, fruitiness and rye like sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, pine, sweetness, coffee, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste had hops, coffee, tartness and bitterness. A rather nice spiced hoppy brew. The coffee was mild enough.
