A Style-defying Double IPA with Cacao & Coffee

Clearly, style lines have been crossed. Is it half-IPA, half-stout? Not quite. It’s definitely all IPA, but it’s also the best of both styles, making this love child of a beer simply just a beautiful, pleasure-seeking meld of imperial IPA and mocha indulgence. How did we come up with this inexplicably delicious creation? Well, that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that it exists and that it’s here for you now, thanks to our deliberate disregard for brewing norms. Some things are not meant to be known, just enjoyed...thoroughly.

Liberty Station Brewing Manager Kris Ketcham was inspired by two beers to create this wonderful IPA. Aleman / Two Brothers / Stone DayMan Coffee IPA and Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise golden stout triggered an inspiration in Kris to brew an IPA with both coffee and cocoa influence. When he first brewed this in 2015, it was an instant smash hit. And now we’ve found a great home for it!

Bottle. I love it when breweries experiment and try and come up with something new. This is another fine example of that. Great job stone. This is a really good beer.

From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Aroma has big mocha up front with milk chocolate and coffee. Bittering hops in the finish. Flavour is lightly sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Lots of tasty mocha, not many typical fruity IPA flavours besides the bitterness. Tasty.

Kettner, February 2024. Paired with a Girl Scout Samosa cookie. Clear, copper, beautiful brew. Thin lace. Earthy, malt forward yet still thin. Unfamiliar foliage, cooked note. Heavy grapefruit pith on the tail. Kinda good?

Had this once or twice before, loved it then, love it now. Pours a lovely shade of red copper, little to no head. Aroma is fruity coffee and sweet malts. Flavours are surprisingly complex, IIPA with some booze and hoppiness and loads of coffee. This is unusual but it completely hits my flavour button! I really love this. Beautiful balance of flavours too, and at 9%! Amazing stuff.

From bottle. Wet coffee aromas. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Well-balanced, with vanilla notes, strong coffee flavours and well-hidden booziness.
