A Style-defying Double IPA with Cacao & Coffee
Clearly, style lines have been crossed. Is it half-IPA, half-stout? Not quite. It’s definitely all IPA, but it’s also the best of both styles, making this love child of a beer simply just a beautiful, pleasure-seeking meld of imperial IPA and mocha indulgence. How did we come up with this inexplicably delicious creation? Well, that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that it exists and that it’s here for you now, thanks to our deliberate disregard for brewing norms. Some things are not meant to be known, just enjoyed...thoroughly.
Liberty Station Brewing Manager Kris Ketcham was inspired by two beers to create this wonderful IPA. Aleman / Two Brothers / Stone DayMan Coffee IPA and Stochasticity Project Master of Disguise golden stout triggered an inspiration in Kris to brew an IPA with both coffee and cocoa influence. When he first brewed this in 2015, it was an instant smash hit. And now we’ve found a great home for it!

12 oz bottle, 12/31/17. Nice golden-amber color. Nice mix of the mocha / coffee / chocolate malts and citrusy hops. Really tasty stuff.

355ml bottle. Cloudy, dark amber colour with average, thick, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Citrusy and slightly resinous, hoppy aroma, condensed, zesty citrus notes of lemon and orange, rather subtle mocha support. Taste is moderately sweet malty, notes of caramel and toffee mingled with sugared mocha, slightly artificial overtones of houndreds and thousands, citrusy hoppy notes of lemon and orange peel. The nose gives an idea of how to use coffee as well supporting, not dominating adjunct, taste is too sweet and slightly artificial, therefore slightly unbalanced and conglomerate.

(Draught at BrewDog Kungsholmen, Stockholm, 31 Aug 2017) Reddish amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty nose with notes of orange peel, caramel, toffee, black-currant and hints of chocolate. Fruity, malty taste with black-currant, orange peel, caramel, coffee, chocolate and a generous spicy bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and quite complex, with lots of hop driven flavours combined with coffee and chocolate. Very nice.

Bottle. Copper pour with a tall, off-white head. Interesting aroma, coffee, cocoa, orange marmalade and vanilla. Interesting flavor too.First is a dry, dark roast coffee and hop bitterness. Finishes with hoppy bitterness like an IPA.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phloen Chit, Bangkok. Poured a slightly hazy light amber with a frothy white head and some broken lace. The aroma is chocolate malt, woody, light resin hop. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet with a crisp, sweet chocolate, resin, woody, alcoholic hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Surprisingly good for a gimmicky style that usually cancels itself out like an illegal punch in boxing. Hazy golden pour with decent head and lacing. Mocha and sharp pine come together pretty well. Tangy finish with some caramel mocha. Tap.

Vom Fass Stone Brewing Berlin 2016-08 getrunken.

Crisp, clear amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of very pleasant chocolate along with some biscuity malt, a small amount of hops and a lot of alcohol - more of the chocolate than anything though. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong biting chocolate bitterness at first with a nice hop backbone showing some grassy and piney hops along with a big malt flavour and more pungent malt and alcohol finish - strong throughout, but the bitterness from both the chocolate and hos is very noticeable. Aftertaste shows some light coffee and grassy flavours with some alcohol and more pungent malt than anything else. Overall, a nice (surprising, giving it’s a stone beer) IPA that shows a balance of chocolate and malt somehow, with some moderate hops, but the alcohol and body support this one well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 31-May-2017 for US$3,75 sampled in my hotel room here in Richmond, Virginia on 19-August-2017.
