Blitzen is a celebratory beer released in December, brewed to encapsulate flavours of the holiday. Early versions featured plum and lemon in the body of an Imperial Saison, while 2021's batch is an ode to After 8 chocolates.
It's rich and smooth like an Imperial Stout should be, with elements of mint, chocolate, and vanilla. The perfect winter night cap.

(473ml can c/o Herbalist, thanks!) Near-black pour with a thin beige head and no lace. Aroma is lots of mint with confectionery chocolate, lightly toasted earthy malts, soft burnt sugar, a little vanilla, definitely mint-led and After Eight as claimed. Flavour is drier than the nose would suggest, certainly not heavy pastry; mint ample up front but not overly synthetic, a lot of dusty cacao and cocoa powder but not sweetened chocolate, light roast malt with a little sugar sweetness but also acidity from the roast that pops up later in the sip, not wholly compensated for by vanilla, mixing with dusty slightly bitter cacao and lintering mint in the finish. Light boded for style, creamy carbonation, alcohol hidden. A little light in flavour overall for an imp stout, mint is a tough adjunct but a beefier stout base would help it. Decent but I didn't adore it.
