Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a super sweet molasses with a decent hop and some licorice. Flavor is a lot of licorice and dark fruit with a molasses. Lots of dark fruit and a decent roast follow the swallow. A decent roasted nuttiness and then a nice dark fruit a licorice make this a nice beer to look for. Not a heavy porter but the additions make this a winner.

Purchased at Beer Temple in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a relatively warm Monday night before the first freeze of the winter. Appearance is a murky black with a very thin off white rim. Aroma like root beer, licorice, light chocolate. Taste has a hint of root beer flavor, light nut, licorice, interesting complexity. Not quite sure how I feel about this one, it’s decent.

12 oz. bottle sent for review. Their recommended glass is a bulbous tulip with straight sides at the top. A regular Belgian snifter will have to do. Pours an opaque brown under thin ring of brown foam. Smell has a little bit of roast malt to it, and some toasted nut shell. Bit of licorice shows up a few sniffs later. Taste has licorice up first. That’s one of those tastes I’ve never been able to cozy up to. Luckily it’s not overwhelming. Mouthfeel is fizzy. There is some roasty malt in the background. A bit of coffee, perhaps. A finely made beer, but it just happens to focus on a taste I never cared for.
