22 oz bottle from the Funky Buddha Imperial Club. The beer is a very dark brown with some lighter highlights at the edges. The head is smallish and tan in color. Just a bit of lacing. The aroma is sweet and full of fun flavor without any of the artificialness that I was worried about. Vanilla is the biggest note with a heavy hit of brown sugar underneath. Apples are definitely in pie territory, baked and sweet without standing out too much. Moderate cinnamon, which also thankfully doesn’t take over. Very sweet bourbon barrel flavor with mild oak. Taste is fairly sweet, as it should be for this kind of beer, but still cleans up enough in the finish and the beer doesn’t seem syrupy. Toasty caramel malt, vanilla beans, light apple, more sweet bourbon. Mouthfeel is probably a bit lighter than it could be but it does help it avoid cloying territory. This beer is definitely better than I expected. It is what it says on the label, a sweet cinnamon-vanilla-apple pie-bourbon barrel double brown, and with worse execution, this would be a trainwreck, but FB really hits the flavors well. Nothing dominates in an unfortunate way, the beer is sweet without being difficult to drink, and it’s ultimately a rather fun dessert beer.
