Gose Style Beer

Most brewers spend a lot of time and effort keeping lactobacillus out of their breweries; it was the first thing we brought in (it still has to stay in the corner though). We blend together two different beers to make Troublesome. The first is a somewhat uninteresting wheat beer and the second is an overly acidic & funky beer fermented solely with lactobacillus. We blend the two beers together with coriander and salt at the tail end of fermentation to create a mild, lemony tartness and a fuller sensation of mouthfeel. And yes, it's hard to make.

Hops: Northern Brewer
Malts: Pils, Wheat Malt, Flaked Wheat, Flaked Oats
Secret Ingredients: Coriander and Lactobacillus

Slightly hazy crisp golden coloured body with a honey glow and a very thin, single centimetre tall white head. Aroma of pure gose with a little funk, some light sugars, a hint of hay, some grass, barnyards and a little cat pee as well - funky as hell, but very light. Super light bodied; Mellow lemon and coriander seed flavour with a little hops perceptible, but basically a mild wit with some slightly funkier flavours. Aftertaste shows some lemons and light grains with no alcohol or sourness at all to speak of, but just some hay and grass. Overall, a nice very very light beer with a subdued complexity and depth that is really only noticed on the back-end of a sip and then only for a few seconds. Great to try and a good, but not great representation of the style - a perfect beer for a hot summer, but luckily we’ve had a very easy summer in Washington. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Bowery), New York on 25-April-2014 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on 18-August-2014.

Draft. Golden beer with a whitish head. Tart and light wheat aroma. Tart flavor with light citrus and light saltiness. Medium bodied. Refreshing. Salt and tartness lingers with light fruitiness.

Keg at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014, yellow session. 02/05/2014. Aroma is salty, lemon, tquilla, spicy hop. Appearance is very pal yellow with a lasting white head. Flavour is salty, wheat grains, some seaweed, and light tart finish. Palate is light is and dryish on the tongue. Decent refreshing beer. Nice example of the style.

This was poured into a stange.
The appearance was a slight hazy golden yellow color with a slight transparency to it. Fast carbonation was seen rising to try to fill a one finger soft white foamy head that dissipated to a quarter finger’s worth.
The smell was slightly earthy with a sweet vaporous lemon, light graininess/wheat, light coriander, light grape comes through as it warms.
The taste was sweet through the wheat and a light lemon and grape combining and then letting in that coriander spice to balance. The salt is there but extremely mild.
On the palate, this one sat pretty light and came across extremely sessionable. My tongue does end up feeling a slight sharpness most likely due to the salt but it could also be from the wheat.
Overall, my first one by Off Color, and I hope it won’t be my last as I’m hoping my local bottle shop will bring in more. Way to go to Percy’s for getting this!

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Pours slightly hazy golden with small white. Aroma is light tart, medium/light body, lower carbonation, and thin small bubble lacing. Taste is tart, funky, coriander, and salt. Not bad, but I prefer other goses.

Bread crust, shit, and coriander aroma. Hazy yellow, thin head. Tart lemon, coriander, malt. Still a little shitty, but it almost works. Drinks like a berliner weisse and witbier combined. Clean dry finish. Spritzy. Nice concept, but the execution needs some work.

A hazy light yellow beer with a lazing white head. The aroma has notes of straw, lemons, and brettanomyces. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemons, straw, and a bit of brett, leading to a tart finish. 7/2/7/3/13
