Single-hop. Perhaps you’ve heard this term being thrown around lately, maybe wondering what exactly people are talking about. The idea is to create a beer with only one variety of hops so you can fully appreciate its flavors and complexities. We decided to make NELSON THE IMPALER using only the exceedingly rare and delicious Nelson Sauvin hops, grown exclusively in Nelson, New Zealand. Why? Because we can. Very light in color due to the use of almost exclusively Pilsner malt, intense grapefruit and hints of pineapple and mango make it surprisingly big on flavor with a refreshing, dry finish.

Notes: Single-hop Nelson pale. Tropical and grapefruit notes with light malt character

Bottled. Not sure what went wrong here but poured a dirty yellow and was a mouthful of astringent grapefruit. Couldn’t finish.

Bottle thanks to that Hat Guy. Pours a hazy yellow gold with small white head that lasts. The aroma is lemon zest and floral. Medium mouth, pine, grapefruit, resin finish, good.

20th May 2016, 22oz bottle conditioned, shared with my son in California while on holiday. Pale, straw coloured with a white fading head. Citrus hop front, with a light malty base: expected a bit more hop bite and oomph to be honest, flavours more subtle than impaling.

22 Oz bottle poured. Pours a cloudy lemonade color with a full foam mousse head. Lemon citrus aroma that is said on like in a blind check. Flavor is lemon, grassy hops, dank, and a plastic finish. Fun beer that borders on style. Pretty good.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden straw color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, cracker, bread, herbal, straw, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity of bright citrus/fruity hops and light-moderate pale malt balance; with good strength. Taste of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, cracker, bread, herbal, straw, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange zest, pear, apple, white grape, peppercorn, cracker, bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of bright citrus/fruity hops and light-moderate pale malt balance; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very nice pale ale style. All around good complexity and robustness of bright citrus/fruity hops and light-moderate pale malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

So, are we running out of decent names for breweries in californ-eye-eh?? From a bottle looks like a wit beer almost. Smell is a little hoppy. Yes, does have some green grapefruit attributes. Could almost be a lighter IPA. Comes across stronger than 5% fer sure. Now a lasting astringent bitter thing set s in in the finish. Fer sure, I pa territory but less viscous on the palate. Can’t taste the wheat thing other mention here. Every swig evolves from this fruity green grapefruit citrus thing into a bustling ambiguous piercing ale bitter bite.
