The monastery brewery was founded in 1700 and existed for over 270 years, survived all crises and raw material shortages, but not the second wave of expropriation and nationalization of the GDR. In 1973 the brewery had to close due to government pressure.

Since 1993 the St. Marienstern Klosterbräu has been restored. The beer is brewed by the Wittichenau city brewery as a client brewer. The Klosterbräu beer are available in the monastery shop.

Draught. Lager aroma, not good. Clear dark brown colour. Stable light brown head. The flavour is roasted and very bready. The aftertaste is bready and a bit sweet.

(Bottle 50 cl) Very dark brown with an underlying orange hue. Small, beige head. Very distinct aroma of roasted malt. Same thing in the flavour that also has some sweetish caramel and notes of bread. Rather unusual malty character, but not unpleasant as such. Very subdued bitterness. 110905

Bottle: Very dark amber coloured, thin lasting head; thin malty nose, some roasted malts, but wet cardboard too; sweetish start, drier malty taste towards the end; light bitter-malty finish (roasted malts ???) No doubt, better than the light brews of this beer-factory.........

Dark chestnut colouring, fluffy and lacing brown head. Very light roasty aroma. Dough and roast and that weird spicy note (nuts, soy, acid, gunpowder, vegetables) that was in the Lausitzer Pils as well - not as awfull here as in the light pilsner, but still not good - they should consider changing their yeast. Relatively lightbodied, sticky mouthfeel, fungus aftertaste.
