(Can) Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is worryingly dominated by a vegetable aroma that I know is chilies, with hints of toffee. Full bodied, smooth and sticky with fine prickly carbonation giving excellent mouthfeel. Taste is pretty impressive and complex. So… there’s a lovely toffee sweetness and chocolate throughout the palate, and there is an enjoyable chili burn that builds from barely perceptible at the start to enjoyably hot in the finish, without being overpowering. There’s some raisins and cherry fruitiness at the start and some cinnamon hints in the mid palate. For such a high ABV the alcohol is not obvious; maybe any alcohol burn is masked by the chili. There is a generally fortified wine feel though. Very enjoyable. I love chilies and I love beer, and the combination can work well, but rarely does. This is an exception and I think it works because of the good balance with the chocolate and sweetness.
