Behold the subtle power of a beer whose simplicity of elements belies its complex spirit. Pilsener malt, noble Hallertau hops, lager yeast, and deep well water. By scaling up these simple ingredients we’ve turned the German pilsener "imperial" and made one of the world’s most refreshing styles of beer bigger, rounder and even more enjoyable.

From my backlog. Golden colour with a frothy white head with good duration and nice lacework. Aroma is malty with fruity notes and some citrus hints. Flavor is slightly sweet at the beginning, good maltiness, fruity and floral traces are also present. The final is slightly bittery with some creamy notes.

Location: Draft at Amity Hall, 9/27/13

Aroma: The nose has some earthy hops, grass, spice, grains, some citrus, and floral notes
Appearance: It pours a hazy golden color with a decent sized head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is well-balanced, malty, grassy, earthy, and grainy, with some fruity notes
Palate: The body is medium, it has a crisp feel, average carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought this one was really quite enjoyable. I've been pretty impressed with Blue Mountain lately. Between the likes of Hardywood, Blue Mountain, Devil's Backbone, and the classic Legend (among others), my home state is turning into quite the beer state. Virginia represent!

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before June 2014 on the cork. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a 2-3 finger dense white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big lemon, pear, apple, pepper, floral, bread, honey, cracker, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with great balance of malt, hop, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, pepper, floral, bread, cracker, honey, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, pepper, floral, bread, honey, cracker, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and good complexity of earthy hops, malt, and fruity ester flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly slick, smooth, and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Imperial pils! All around nice balance of hop, malt, and fruity ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Pizzeria Paradiso, Alexandria tap ($8): Pours some sort of orange color with a white head. Aroma is mostly malty, with some hoppiness in there. Not much crispness up in here; however, this is very smooth and the alcohol does not eliminate all of the pilsener qualities. Alcohol is well-covered in any case. This is an OK, but somewhat forgettable imperial pils.

Sampled on draft at the 2nd annual Virginia Beer Festival at Capital Ale House Midlothian. Pours a clear golden color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy malts with strong earthy, spicy hop notes. Taste is very bitterly hoppy with spicy notes. Also fruity peach notes and caramel. Full bodied. Blue Mountain impresses.... again.
