The minute you crack your can, aroma of grapefruit, mango and pine hit you in the face; like a beaver slapping his tail on a pristine small body of water in Ontario. Canuck pours a deep gold, bordering on burnt orange that produces a tight snowy white toque. Take one last nose before getting into the liquid, which you’ll soon find will be hard to put down. Soft carbonation leads into a sweet honeyish start before it gives way to more grapefruit, tropical citrus, canned peaches and pine. Light to medium body with a very dry finish. Drink at your local pub, in the fish hut, campground, the beach, in a canoe (responsibly), playing shinny, on a log…actually, anywhere north of the 49th.

On tap at Bar Volo, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma of floral notes, some minty notes, and some residual candied sugar. Flavour is fairly muted, with notes of minty notes, biscuit, and lemon. Not a very interesting or thirst-quenching pale. Decent.

473ml can. Minimally cloudy golden to amber colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Caramel malty aroma, citrusy hoppy overtones, hints of grapefruit and pine. Taste is bitter hoppy, citrusy, notes of grapefruit, a touch of lemon, caramel malty background with a biscuity touch; super soft palate, fairly lasting crisp bitter hoppy finish. Clean, precise, superb soft mouth-feel.

Can from the LCBO. Pours a hazy light amber with a generous off white head that hangs around. Aroma is piney hops and pineapple. Nice level of bitterness but not spectacular. Medium slick mouth-feel with average carbonation and a long finish. Quite drinkable.

At my Uncle’s place during my trip to Canada last summer. It poured an orange-gold with a nice floral hop aroma. The taste was a classic easy drinking APA, light, refreshing & with a clean dry bitter finish. It didn’t blow me away but didn’t disappoint. Solid. Rated from memory. 3.3

Well this is lame to see Canucklehead aliased to this average brew...
Great Lakes canucklehead on cask at Volo. Cloudy orange gold color. Sharp apricot and sweet stone fruit aroma. Soft silky mouthfeel on a medium body. The taste is crisp bitter orange and peaches. On cask and with the citra it shot up to a 3.8

Canette 473ml.

2012-10-21, cask at C’est What, Toronto, as Canucklehead, 7-4-8-5-16=40
Cloudy deep blond color; small creamy head. Nice aroma of fruity hops, and light sweat. Smooth toffee flavor; very nice hopping, strong but fully aromatic, more fruity than resiny; quite long final.
Seems fresher than last night. Very good.

2012-10-20, cask at Volo, Toronto, as Canucklehead, 7-4-7-5-14=37
Cloudy amber color; medium sized creamy head. Cloudy amber color, creamy head. Nice aroma, hop-fruity; also some rubber and hop sweat. Low carbonation; good toffee flavor, with good hopping, fruity and creamy; there is a hint of grappa.
Good, but probably better on normal non-cask draught.

Smells like floral hops with some grapefruit, even grape. Colour is blond hazy, good lacing. Good head retention. Taste has more hops and fruitiness. Faint but not unpleasant sourness. This beer is wonderful - a great, original pale ale, so much more than the standard hops and malt standard. Among the better APAs I’ve tasted. On cask at Castro’s Lounge.
