"Lordy, that’s as red as the devil’s britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil’s Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil’s Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland’s twist on the great American IPA.

12oz bottle pours a clear brick red with some creamy, lacing white head. Nose is nice and approachable, orange, grapefruit, lemon candy, malt, cracker, some hand soap. Flavor is solid too, bitter, soapy, pine, grapefruit pulp, orange zest, a little vegetal, some malt, cracker. Medium bodied, lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish.

Clear dark amber with a sticky, off-white head. The aroma is a little different. Woodsy, with a melon rind hop aroma. The flavor has a good bitterness to it with a nice dry finish. Needs a little more malt in the middle to balance. It seems hollow somehow.

Bottle in NYC. Pours clear, deep copper with a moderate, foamy white head. Hmm, the beer seems to have some odd off-flavors. There’s some bread, musty wood, dried caramel, herbal pine. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Dry, earthy, piney and herbal bitterness on the finish, low sweetness, more musty wood, basement. Pretty poor.
