The Mariner was brewed using Belgian Pilsner malt and a generous portion of Spelt. We hopped this beer exclusively with Wai-Iti in the kettle and fermented with a traditional Kolsch strain. After fermentation it was dry-hopped with more of the same lot of Wai-Iti.

On tap at Ridgewood, pours a hazy bright yellow with a small white head. Nose has notes of straw, subtle floral dry-hopping, and minerality. Flavour is quite bitter, with bitter floral dry-hopping, straw, and crisp biscuity malt. Extremely bitter for a kolsch, but just not very interesting flavour-wise. Okay.

473ml can. Slightly cloudy, dark yellow-ish, golden colour with average, fluffy, moderately lasting and lacing, white head. Minimally bready, pale malty and slightly yeasty fruity aroma, hints of white bread crust, a touch of apricot, protein. Taste is mildly bitter, minimally fruity hoppy and slightly yeasty fruity, minimally bready, pale malty basis, hints of apricot, white bread crust, a touch of protein, minimally metallic overtones. Minimally mushy, watery texture, rather dry palate, medium to fine, dense, foamy, prickly carbonation. Relatively meaty for the style, nice Wiess aspects - not bad.

First dh klsch I ever had was Gffels Sonnenhopfen, which is second only to regular Gffels on my klsch list. Here we have a bit of gloppy pale malt nose, light grassy hop. Moderate bitterness. That malt is not to Holy Mountain standards. My top eight klsch are all still from Kln and even Holy Mountain can't change that.
