This festive German lager is traditionally brewed at the end of the winter brewing season and then lagered at near-freezing temperatures during the summer months to be released to adoring fans in September just in time for the season’s festivities. Our take on this classic style spends months fermenting until it finally adopts the soft, complex, and elegant character for which it is known.
This always anticipated release from Michigan’s only all-lager brewery is characterized by toasted bread crust notes, uncanningly clean flavors, and finished off with a mild toffee sweetness. German Noble hops balance out this elegant, malty brew, leaving you refreshed and clamoring for your next sip as you enjoy the change from Michigan Summer to Michigan Fall.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a dark caramel color with a full two fingers of off white head that lingers. Sweet malt, toasted molasses and light herbal hops on the nose. A bit sweet for me, but enjoyable enough.

16 ounce can into dimpled mug, canned on 8/1/2018. Pours slightly hazy dark orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, crust, dough, toasted biscuit, light nutty, and herbal/grassy earthiness. A bit of fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and mild earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, crust, dough, toasted biscuit, light nutty, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Mild herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, crust, dough, toasted biscuit, light nutty, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt and mild earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying flavors after the finish. Nicely clean on lager flavors, with minimal fruity/yeasty notes present. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 6%. Overall this is a very good Oktoberfest. All around nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt and mild earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the minimally bitter/drying finish. A bit darker on the malts than expected, but delicious. Very clean and rich dark/Munich malt complexity, with mild noble hop balance against sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example as expected.
