Muddy reddish-brown colour. Voluptuous aroma of cherries, anise, merlot, wood, balsamic vinegar, Special B. Sweet, oily body. Flavour is sweet & sour with a pronounced bourbon front, fading into a jammy, plummy, date-like middle. It gets tarter as it goes, with a good underlying dryness from both wood and alcohol. There’s a bit of balsamic late. There is also a bit of yeastiness that renders the flavours less bright than perhaps my description would lead you to believe, but this is an impressive if completely rough and crazy example of the style. The word in PDX is that the brewer here is quite talented...this beer must be his coming out party to the rest of the world.
