A slightly sweet, medium bodied dark ale with a moderate chocolate malt flavor and a medium hop bitterness. Originating in London around 300 years ago, the name Porter is said to have been derived from its popularity with the working class. “If work is the curse of the drinking classes, porter was their salvation.”

Growler thanks to Mike! Pours a clear chestnut and a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with a bit of supporting dark chocolate. Flavor starts with dark grains and grows to have roasted malts as well as a bit of bitter chocolate in the finish.

Sample at the brewpub. Dark brown pour with a medium thin and creamy tan head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and malt. Medium, somewhat dry body with flavors of roasted malt, coffee and touches of hops and chocolate. The finish is roasty with a short coffee aftertaste. Decent overall.

On tap at Royal Oak BC. Dark brown-red body, thin/medium off-white head. Roasty, toasty, bitter aroma. Surprisingly hoppy body (especially after I tried the surprisingly malty ASA) complementing the roasty, toasty malts with bitter pine and hints of grapefruit. I think I was in Amarillo land. Coffee is also prevalent. Unusual porter but a tasty one too.

Dark brown. Slight acidity. Dark roasty notes. Light coffee. Tasted at the Michigan Brewer's Festival 2003 - I would reckon my palate was in less than stellar condition. It seemed decent but a re-rate is definitely required.
