Chad’s beer is a ramped-up Barley Wine Style Ale. Rich, malty and multi-layered, this baby has some intensity to it. You’ll find it pours amberish with an off-white head of foam and moderate dried fruit and hop notes. You’ll also get a little biscuity, carmely, toffee flavored goodness in there. This thing is, in a word, BIG.

Bomber shared by Nate & Andrea at the April 2023 PS tasting, 4/8/23. 10 years to the day after bottling. Clear red, thin tan head, good retention. Aroma of toffee, toast, cherry. Oxidation notes. Taste is toffee, raisin, tinny hop. Full bodied. A bit harsh but still not too bad for a decade old. Glad to have been able to try this. Better late than never! I wonder if Chad still works there.

Pour is a murky brown with a very small tan head. Aroma is brown sugar, toffee, dark fruit and alcohol. Flavor is caramel, toffee, sweet malt and even some wood smoke. Mouthfeel is super thick and heavy but that only helps sipping this powerful beer. Alcohol is there but not in a big way. Finish is brown sugar and plum. This was a very nice barley wine. Full of flavor, very thick and warming.

22 oz bomber purchased at Mike’s Wine and Spirits in Kansas City, Missouri. Bottled 04/08/2013. The pour is mostly clear reddish copper brown with not too much tan head. The aroma is sticky caramel, some pear fruit and a noticeable alcohol heat. The taste is pretty sharp caramel sugar sweet, rough chewy maltiness and bright alcohol heat, which really jumps out and liners boozily in the finish. The pear of the nose, is more cherry in the flavor - somewhat cough drop cherry at that. Flavors, and the booze come together a bit better as the beer warmed. The palate is medium to light bodied, low carbonation, nearly flat - which gives this a syrupy mouth feel. The aftertaste is sweet boozy alcohol, tastes like cheap booze. I probably love Lakefront more than anyone I know, though this beer didn’t work for me.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 11/13/13

Aroma: The nose is heavy malty, lots of toffee, caramel, dark fruit, booze, and a little spice
Appearance: Pours a clear mahogany color with a bubbly froth of beige head and plenty of lace
Flavor: The flavor is heavy sweet/malty, lots of toffee/caramel, some mild spice/bitterness
Palate: The body is full, it feels thick, rich, and sticky, with some heat, and a dry, spicy finish
Overall Impression: This is a super malt-forward offering. It is quite sweet, thick, and almost syrupy on the mouth. Worth trying, but for me it lacks too much balance to be truly drinkable.
