Next to the palomino grape - for most of the sherries - and the pedro ximénez - for sherries carrying the respective name, some sherry bodegas also vinify the muscatel grape to a sweet, densely tearing fortified wine with long barrel ageing. For this small batch of Zenne y Frontera, we aged two- and three-year old lambikken on south-Spanish Moscatel barrels. Upon its bottling, the weighted average age of this blend surpassed 31 months. The lambikken originate from four different barrels and nine different brews.

One of the tougher ones to get, as I did seem to have missed this back when. Fortunately, The mysterious mister G helped me out, and here I am. For today's celebratory bottle - Zenne with a specific Moscatel - barrel history. Moscatel, generally being my least favorite of the unblended sherries (though 1 or 2 examples really do peak above and beyond, Tonelles by Valdespino being one of the best sherries or even drinks i've ever tried) is typically very floral, fruity, and (to me) pot pourri, but less so than muskat wines for instance. I'm curious to how it will lend itself to this barrel story.

Pours a rather unclear amberblonde. Medium small white head, of low-average stability. Scent is very full, funky and woody. Less sharp than the average modern era 3F. Sherry isn't very prominently recognizable, but does give a lot of complexity to the aroma. Indeed some of the (what I call) pot pourri, but that (less loved by me) feature is very low and even more so acceptable. It's got a certain 'wine' like alcohol touch, grapyness. The taste is quite dry, loads of sherry now - but less on the typical moscatel. Tasting blindly, Fino is the one that pops up the most in my mind - even though thats very different. It's very dry, it's got that yeast-touch '(like Fino) , and the slightly higher alcohol. Very mild oxidation, but it builds up as I sip more and more from this one.Ooh this is an interesting batch. The stuff I like less about moscatel, is very tuned down. I imagine this being a negative for those (who know the type and) expected to taste more of that. For me personally though, it delivers a Fino-like front, with a more oxidative backbone. Amontillado, almost. Very, very interesting how the expression of the barrel can be so different to the sherrystyle that came out of it. It lacks some of the brutality and power (of the oxidative notes) to be in line with the very best ZYF's, but this one in terms of quality and expression can be concidered one of the better ones for sure. Elegant yet funky yet barrel expressive. Wonderfull !

Very dry finish, feels more boozy than the 7% it's listed as on the bottle.

If I run into another bottle by some mystery, this surely would be a buy-again !

0,75l bottle shared at home. Amber lightly hazy color, very small white head. smells funky, sherry, curry, grassy, subtle sweetness, light honey. Very nice complex smell. full body, no carbonation. tastes peppery, sherry, tobacco, earthy, curry, spices, oak, walnuts, peppery. finishes lightly dry and lightly sour with notes of sherry, walnuts and light buddy5 notes. Very nice one, very good complexity
